Daily Sketch #30

Chef Duff

I'm a big Food Network geek. I watch way too many cooking shows and Iron Chef America. This season I also started tivoing "Ace of Cakes" because I noticed that it was based out of Baltimore. I don't know why, but I get a big kick out of seeing all of the local landmarks and places I recognize on the show. Plus Chef Duff Goldman and his staff seem like really cool, fun people. So today's sketch is a quick doodle of Duff done while I was watching last week's new episode.
And as a bonus, a little sketch of my cat Ender. Poor guy had a long weekend, his paw got infected due to an allergic reaction to the killer pollen in Baltimore this spring. The vet over at Northwest Animal Hospital took awesome care of him on Friday though and he's on the mend. But this morning he decided his breakfast didn't agree with him and ejected it all over the carpet in my living room... right in front of the couch. I suppose I should be happy it wasn't ON the couch...

Good Monday morning to all...

Daily Sketch #29

Madame Mirage Duex

Another quick sketch of Madame Mirage, Paul Dini's new character through Top Cow that's been building some very solid buzz online and in stores.

Congrats to my little bro Tim who's graduating from Loyola College tomorrow. I can't believe it's already been 4 years! Way to go Tim!

Daily Sketch #28

Watchin' TV and a Bonus

I asked Danielle what I should sketch for the blog last night and she joked "Draw me". So despite her protests, I worked a quick one up of her watching TV. The cat came and sat down about halfway through ready for his close up, but I didn't include him. He was not pleased.

And as a bonus, here's a panel in progress from "Dead Inspector". Or it's another bit of insight into my morning ritual with the coffee cup. The one with Chuck Norris on it. Don't be jealous.

Daily Sketch #27

KHAN!

So, feeling a little cranky this morning and decided to recreate this famous scene from Star Trek II starring me. It's my own fault really, it all started with me deciding to quick chill a can of soda in the freezer yesterday afternoon... and then forgetting about it. Yup, I'm a genius!

Remake/Remodel: Carnacki The Ghost-Finder

Another Engine remake/remodel project, this one a fun 1900s Ghost Investigator. Check out the link for more info on the original and then let me know what you think of my take. Kind of fun I think.

Daily Sketch #25

Wow... 25!

25 daily sketches. I gotta admit I'm pretty proud of that! They're not all fantastic, but I'm really enjoying doing them and I think the act of doing a daily sketch is more important for me than how they actually come out. Not even sure if anyone is looking at these and again I'm not sure it matters. For those of you looking - thanks!
Oh, and David from "DI" has a gun. And he thinks you look kind of shifty.

Daily Sketch #24

Iggy Wins

Dead Inspector writer, JC Vaughn and I had a great meeting last night over a couple of beers to strategize our plans for launching DI. I came out of the meeting pretty excited about this little project we're cooking up. We fleshed out some more story concepts, planned out our time table in more detail, and determined that our "mystery character" will take the Iggy Pop look rather than the Big Lebowski look I was playing with. Before JC arrived I was sketching out another Big Lebowski head sketch, but it seemed wrong to put it up by itself now that I know that the look won't be used. So I did a quick Iggy head sketch this morning as well. Two daily sketches for the price of one today - Iggy wins.

Daily Sketch #23

Remake/Remodel: Buck Rogers

Over at the Engine, this week's Remake/Remodel is Buck Rogers. I thought I'd take the classic sci-fi futuristic hero and put a current spin on him. Buck Rogers wakes up in a world where global warming has gone unchecked and the world is largely covered in water as glaciers at the poles have melted at increasingly alarming rates. Humankind has finally switched from fossil fuels and Buck's soldier uniform is powered by solar and hydro power and gives off no polluting gases. The intense sun requires him to remain completely covered from head to toe and special goggles are required to go out during the day. A breathing unit protects him from the toxic air. Fun!

Take Two

Here's another concept for my "mystery guy" from Dead Inspector. More Dude from Big Lebowski than Iggy Pop.

Daily Sketch #21

Supergirl Redesign

Jumping on board with another one of Warren Ellis' Engine "Remake/Remodel" threads, here's my take on Supergirl. I decided to go with dark hair to match up a bit more visually with her cousin Kal-El pulled back in a ponytail so her hair stays out of her face when she's flying. The rest of the costume is a bit pilot inspired with a little bit of teen fashion thrown in. Pilot-esque boots and most of the body covered up seemed to make sense for the flying bit. Instead of a cape, a red "hoodie" and instead of a skirt I figured a teenage girl would probably prefer some stylish jeans.

Back to work after taking Friday off for a wedding (congrats, Lee & Christy!) and playing my first golf game. Had a ton of fun... might have to do it again!

Daily Sketch #20

Paul Dini's Madame Mirage

Today's sketch is one I did while I was manning the booth in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Madame Mirage is a new property we're launching at Top Cow (First Look is in stores on May 9th for only 99 cents) by Paul Dini and Kenneth Rocafort. This series is gonna be great and the character is visually fun so I thought I'd drawing her a try.

Daily Sketch #19

Not the first and certainly not the last...

Here's a glimpse at the case that David in Dead Inspector is investigating. This poor girl is not the first victim and unfortunately she won't be the last.

I'm really pretty pleased with how this sketch came out.

Daily Sketch #18

Back from the Pitt!

... or more accurately Monroeville, PA.

Howdy, all! Sorry about the break in coverage of daily sketches. I left Thursday morning for the Pittsburgh Comicon and got back late Sunday. It was a really fun show and Michael & Renee take incredible care of their guests at the show plus raise a ton of money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The funny thing is that I actually completed sketches for Thursday and Friday, but forgot to scan them in before I left. D'oh!

Here's the first one - a quick head sketch of Captain America.

Daily Sketch #17

ENGINE REMAKE 4: The Green Lama

I decided to participate in another one of The Engine's "remodel" threads. This one is for a pulp character called the Green Lama. Here's the original description of the character - "College student Jethro Dumont spends 10 years in Tibet studying the secrets of meditation and returns with mystical powers. He now returns to Park Avenue and New York City to combat crime, evil doers and international enemies and with a magical Tibetan chant, he is transformed into the Green Lama."

My take on the character is - The latest Bollywood superstar hunk, Indraneel Khan, has arrived out of nowhere and soared to the top of the Bollywood social scene thanks in part to his rare and stunning green eyes. No one knows Khan's origins with the exception of his Sikh priest, Guru Pali. Utilizing information gained from his public persona's social interactions, at night Khan dons a fake beard and a traditional costume to combat crime, foreign influences, and social injustice utilizing mystic powers honed at a Tibetan monestary as - The Green Lama.

And in color today! Mostly because it's difficult to convey the whole "green eye" thing without it!

Daily Sketch #16

Who is this guy?

My Iggy Pop inspired guy from "Dead Inspector". Who is he? Guess you'll have to read DI to find out, cause I'm not telling.
On another note, I'll be at Pittsburgh Comicon from Thursday through Sunday so chances of a daily sketch on Friday are pretty slim. Swing by the Top Cow booth and say "hi" if you're at the show.

Daily Sketch #14

Back from NYC & More Bill

The trip to New York was a blast except for briefly losing my laptop at Kinko's and missing my train home it was a good trip. Found a cool new lounge in the Flatiron District and got to hang out with some cool folks.

Here's your daily dose of sketch with another appearance by David's younger hipster brother - Bill. Have a good weekend!

Daily Sketch #13

More David from "DI"

A quickie for everyone today as I'm prepping for a work related trip up to NYC this morning. The sketch tomorrow will be up late as I'll likely not uploaded it until the evening when I get back from my trip.

Daily Sketch #12

Introducing Bill

Meet David's younger brother in Dead Inspector - Bill.

Yesterday the shooting at Virginia Tech made national news and is now the deadliest shooting massacre in US history. The student gunman killed 33 people and wounded 22 more in two shooting incidents yesterday morning. This hits pretty close to home as VA Tech is about 45 minutes away from my home town of Roanoke, Virginia and my youngest sister is a freshman at the school. In a weird bit of good fortune she was home yesterday due to some food poisoning that hit her Sunday morning. Please keep the wounded still be cared for in area hospitals and the families of the departed victims in your thoughts and prayers.

Daily Sketch #11

Better Late Than Never...

Hi Everyone,

Over on the Warren Ellis fueled Engine boards they've been doing a really cool Remake/Remodel thread on a weekly basis where they reinvent old characters in fresh ways. I thought I'd finally man up and do one of these and post it.

Here's my take on Miss Masque largely inspired by this portion of the description - "Miss Masque is the secret identity of Diana Adams, a young socialite who decides to fight crime and injustice in disguise."
The ultimate modern socialite, or certainly most visible in the US is Paris Hilton. So my re-imagining is (frighteningly) Paris Hilton fighting crime. This is only an example of what she might look like, because knowing Paris she would never fight crime in the same outfit twice. Complete with a Justin Timberlake inspired hat, big celebrity shades, and Diamond studded "MM" insignia. Her little dog would probably be her side kick. She wants to be a little disguised, but not really... she's looking for another 15 minutes.

As a side note, Paris has a very square jawline...

Update to come later today

Hi Everyone,

Bit of a late start this morning, so the sketch will be coming later today (around lunch time). Check back in the afternoon.

Daily Sketch #10

A Little Cheat... Or Steve is Unconvinced

Today's sketch is actually the preliminary under drawing to a panel in "Dead Inspector". I'm working on finishing up some of the pages I've been working on so the writer JC Vaughn can pick them up tomorrow to scan in. I just realized recently that we have enough material to last over a month in weekday daily web comic. Pretty cool!

Have a good weekend, all!

Daily Sketch #9

Quickie!

I almost forgot to work up a sketch this morning. I know sad considering it's only the second week! Anyway, this one was a quick one of David from "DI". I'm starting to visualize some promo images for the series and this might end up being a preliminary sketch for David's pose in a group shot.
In other news I had my first root canal yesterday morning. Not a bad experience overall, actually less painful than the average filling at the regular dentist. Definitely a bit sore today though.

Mystery Man...

Possibly a character in "Dead Inspector" that hasn't been shown yet, maybe not. Just sketching around some ideas and came up with this look. Let me know what you think.

Daily Sketch #6

Monday Morning

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter weekend! Week 2 of my sketching experiment begins with a Monday morning sketch. David from "Dead Inspector" had a some what tense weekend as you can see from this morning's sketch. Enjoy!

Daily Sketch #5

Spider-man, Spider-man, does anything...

I figured for Friday I'd do a fun nostalgic superhero sketch. With the new movie coming out I thought Spidey would be an appropriate character. I ended up spending longer on the sketch than I wanted to, but he's got such a fun classic costume! Enjoy and have a good Easter weekend.

Here's another look at Steve, David's badass partner from "Dead Inspector".

Daily Sketch #3

Freeze Scumbag

I'm doing pretty well so far in this experiment to post daily. Here's a quick one showing David from Dead Inspector keeping his gun aimed at a bad guy. What can I say, I've been watching alot of "24" lately. Even if the wheels have fallen off the wagon for that show lately, I can't stop myself from watching. Sigh.

Our protagonist, David from "Dead Inspector". Shhh... he's making an important phone call.

A New Leaf?

TRYING TO BE BETTER BLOGGER

So, this weekend Danielle and I went to see Frank Warren of PostSecret speak at the American Visionary Museum. In addition to being a really cool inspiring presentation and art exhibit, it made me think about this blog and my infrequency at posting.
With that in mind, I've resolved to try and update it daily (barring out of town trips for work and such) with a new sketch. That way there's a little bit of a payoff for the 3 of you checking it regularly. And it'll serve as a good practice/warm up for me as I keep working on the current project ("Dead Inspector"). For the foreseeable future the majority of sketches will likely be tied into "DI"... unless I get bored and feel like drawing Superman. I doubt these will be as cool as Sean Phillips' or Mike Wieringo's sketches

Without further ado - an inaugural sketch of Steve from "Dead Inspector". Enjoy!

lame, lame blogger

Hi Everyone,

I've been really bad about updating my blog lately so for anyone that still checks it regularly - my apologies. I am working on new creative projects including a big creator owned project with my buddy JC Vaughn of 24 & Overstreet's Price Guide fame. We hope to have a significant amount complete by the end of April and it'll be debuting online around that time. Because it's an online project we want to avoid leaking too much prior to the launch. But I am working. Really, I am.
In other news, I'll be at the New York Comicon this coming weekend (Feb 23rd-25th) at the Top Cow booth so stop on by and say "hi" if you're going to be at the show.

Take care!

off to Texas

Hey Gang,

I'll be at WizardWorld Texas this weekend for the day job. Should be a good time and I've never been to Texas (other than connecting through Dallas and Houston on the way to the West Coast) so I'm curious to see how Texas BBQ stacks up against Carolina. Swing by the booth if you're in the neighborhood.

Take care,

Filip

Block Broken

Hey - The past few weeks have been frustrating because I ran into an artistic block. The work wasn't coming out quickly and when it was down on paper it wasn't looking like I'd like. I draw at night and on the weekends after the day job is done which doesn't leave alot of time to warm up the drawing hand. Luckily last night I seem to have shook off the little bad drawing gnome on my left shoulder. I'm excited enough to show you some of the early drawings of the page I was working on last night. From my Black Diamond story. Enjoy! -Filip

America Jr

My good buddy, Todd Livingston (co-writer of cool graphic novels like Black Forest and Wicked West) has a popular new web strip called America Jr. He was kind enough to ask yours truly to draw one of the weekend strips, which are all done by guest artists. Comic Book Resources just did a story on the strip and featured a number of the guest artist pieces at the bottom of the page. Check it and the strip out - http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=8294.

Black Diamond "The Curse"

I'm really excited about this next project, a back up story in Ait/PlanetLar's "Black Diamond" series, written by my bud Larry Young and drawn by Jon Proctor. The story will be written, drawn, and inked all by yours truly. Here's a preview of the thumbnail layouts. Enjoy!

Army of Darkness #12 Cover

Here's a new cover image I recently did for Dynamite Entertainment . It will be featured in issue #12 of Army of Darkness. Part of the issue looks at Ash's origins and days in high school, so I thought the "Fast Times in Ridgemont High" was appropriate.
