I try not to rant too much on this blog and I really try not to rant about politics. Mostly because I don't think anyone cares to hear my opinion on the big topics. But something really got under my skin today. Here in California there was a Proposition on the election day ballot called "Prop 8". Prop 8 basically would amend the California constitution to remove the rights of gay couples to marry. And it looks like it narrowly passed. Passed?!
Honestly, I just don't get it. Why would one couples marriage hurt or invalidate yours? In an era where a black man was just elected President of the United States how can we justify "separate but equal"?
The African American pastor of the largest mega-church in California was on NPR this morning saying that this was a good thing because we had to support the sanctity of marriage. His argument was that the Bible defined marriage as between a man and a woman and that's why it should be law in California.
- Marriage predates the Bible and Christianity. It's origin is a legal contract, not a religious one.
- The Bible is a set of religious beliefs and those beliefs are not shared by everyone in the country. When you hear about a Middle Eastern country restricting the rights of women based on their religious beliefs, you think that's wrong don't you?
And the killer thing for me is that according to polls both African Americans and Latinos voted overwhelmingly in favor Prop 8. How can two minority groups who had their rights restricted for decades now restrict the rights of another group?
Anyway, enough of my ranting. Here's a sketch I did on the train from Madrid to Malaga in Spain.

Fil! Your sketch is Awesome! The character has a very intense stare.
Your 'rant' is also very significant. You make a very interesting point that the folks who have been most oppressed still seemed to support oppressing others. Quite bizzare. Lets hope things continue to improve, looks like we are at least moving in the right direction :)
