Just a quick warm up sketch of a guy wearing a hoodie. Somewhat inspired by watching "Superbad" again last night. Joe said I should have done some penis guy drawings like Seth did in the movie. But then again Mom reads the blog and what would she think...

Just a quick warmup sketch for fun. Did some jump kicks in training last weekend and it inspired the drawing.


I've been re-reading Ex Machina Volume 1 by Brian K Vaughn (or BKV as he's now more frequently referred to) and Tony Harris. The first time I read it a couple years ago I wasn't that impressed. It was okay I thought, but nothing spectacular. I'm about half way through the first volume again and I gotta say, I may have been wrong. The first issue was a pretty spectacular setup by BKV and despite not really having any action the story moves along at a quick pace. And Tony's art is always exceptional. Maybe it's just that I've read Runaways and Dr Strange: The Oath recently, but BKV is quickly moving up my chart. I know, I'm only 3 years behind. But hey, better late than never. I guess I have to get Y: The Last Man next...


The X-Box 360 is returning home today from its trip to the doctor. Unfortunately I have a lunch meeting and I have no doubt that the UPS man will wait until I leave the house to attempt his delivery. He's crafty that way.

More Panel Work



Here's another couple of panels in progress from "Dead Inspector". I'd say these are about 75% complete. JC Vaughn, the writer, sent me the completed issue #1 script yesterday and it has a really fun cliffhanger ending. In the first issue we establish most of the major characters and set up the premise of the entire series. Assuming my art carries its weight, we should have a solid first issue to shop around soon.



D and I went back into the Tivo archives last night and watched the first episode of "Journeyman". We thought is was quite solid and entertaining. They've set up some cool concepts and characters. We'll keep watching a few more episodes (having Tivo'd the entire season) and see how it plays out.

A New Page Begun

Check out this panel of David from "Dead Inspector" at the scene of a recent crime in the most recent page of "DI" I'm working on. I like the expression and body language being conveyed here.

In other news, I saw the latest page from the "Forever Man" project last night drawn by Thomas Nachlik and it is scary good. I got giddy when I saw it. Giddy, people. Can I show it to you? No. I know, I'm a tease. But trust me, it's awesome.

Light Line Drawing


Using a very thin pen I did a quick head sketch with no real blacks laid into it. Just a fun warmup experiment. Not sure who this guy is to be honest.

I saw the "Namesake" last night and really enjoyed it. Kal Penn gave a solid performance but the real shining star in the movie was the woman who played his mother, Tabu, a Bollywood actress. Great movie about family, love, and discovering who you are. Also watched "Number 23" over the weekend which wasn't anything ground-breaking but certainly an entertaining Friday night thriller. Oh and we put up our Christmas decorations this weekend including our decorating the tree. The trouble twins (cats) proceeded to knock have the ornaments off this morning.

Figured It Out

I've been debating how to handle Page 15 in Dead Inspector, whether to go with a straight forward approach of 3 guys walking down an alley way or to vary up the shots. Ultimately I've decided to vary the shots and I'm pretty happy with the layout below.

Off to New York for a quick day trip today. Should be fun and I always enjoy the train ride up and back.

Sigh.... Technology

So, I've managed to restore my iTunes library. Oh, but what a pain. Even after downloading CopyTrans, a pretty neat little program that restores playlist, play counts and so on from your ipod; it still took a couple hours to manually go through the library and delete duplicate files and find some missing ones.

This combined with my X-Box 360 crapping out on me last week (hello, red ring of doom) and D's laptop being really tempermental has made me really weary on the tech front. Or more appropriately the Microsoft front. David from "Dead Inspector" by the way, shares my malaise.

More Toby

Here's another quick sketch of Toby, my mom's dog. He's a cute one, no?

Awesomeness level: somewhat low.

Discovered this morning that I somehow downloaded a bug which wiped out all my files on my shared network drive including my iTunes library and all of my backup files. Fortunately all of my music files were intact. But it's still a pain in the butt to have to recreate my library in iTunes and re-back up the other files. Sigh.

And in other rambling, where did the other interns on Gray's Anatomy go? Sure Meredith's sister is the cutest of the bunch but the others literally disappeared. Not one of the main characters had to deal with their interns this past week. Was it there day off or something?

Toby Sketch

My mom got a dog named Toby the year I left for college. He was a sweet (if somewhat dopey) and handsome golden lab with a great heart and a protective streak. He shed hair all over the house, was scared of storms, and occasionally drooled. When he died earlier this year my mom was devestated. She asked me to create a piece of art for her of Toby for Christmas. I don't think I realized how much I missed him until I went home for Thanksgiving and he wasn't there to greet me or until I started doing some prepatory sketches for the piece. This is the first.

Dwarven Viking



Inspired a bit by Kenneth Rocafort's sketchbook this weekend and a bit by the incredibly cheesy but bloody "Pathfinder" I watched on the flight back to Baltimore, here's a double dose of dwarven viking warrior (to make up for my lack of sketch yesterday). I like the profile shot better than than the full figure.

In other news it looks like my X-Box 360 has the red light of death flashing and games are freezing inexplicably. Here's hoping Xbox Customer Service can help me out...

And excitingly enough I found out last night that my sister Anna will appear on an upcoming episode of MTV's "Made". Pretty damn cool! I'll let folks know once I know the air date.

I'm back in Baltimore after a last minute trip to the airport to catch my late night flight homw Sunday night. I'm glad to be home and it was great to see my future sister-in-law and niece this morning .

Heroes4Heroes Live Art

It's a bonus Saturday morning sketch! Today's sketch is brought to you by Heroes4Heroes which is a non-profit organization that sends portable media like comics, DVDs, music and more to our troops serving overseas. It's a very cool way that the comics community gives back to men and women in uniform. Last night they held a Live Art charity event at the Arlington Ballpark where comic artist created pieces of art while folks partied and bid on other auction items in a silent auction. At the end of the night the pieces were auctioned away. I saw pieces go for $200-$400 and even a few rare ones for over $1000. Towards the tail end of the evening I teamed up with the kickass Kody Chamberlain of Punks and Tag fame and we created the jam piece below. It felt great to be back in front of an easel!

WizardWorld Texas and Jackie's Back

Greetings all from lovely Arlington Texas!
Today's sketch is of Jackie Estacado sporting his new Central American look since we're giving out a ton of The Darkness First Looks at WizardWorld Texas and debuting the new The Darkness trailer.

Yesterday was a long day starting at around 3:30am to catch my flight out, but a good one. I got to visit the flagship store for Lone Star Comics in Dallas. It's an awesome, clean, and well stocked store and I really enjoyed chatting with Chris Powell, the general manager.

Scrubs

D and I were watching a recent episode of Scrubs last night on the ol'Tivo and I lamented that this was the final season for this hilarious sitcom. I don' watch a lot of sitcoms anymore, I tend to prefer TV that tells an ongoing story and has some gravity to it. Other than the occasional Family Guy episode I think Scrubs may be the only sitcom I watch. It may be one of the consistently funny sitcom I've ever seen. Every character on that show has some appeal and is a comedic maestro.

Funniest bit from last night - the elevation of Snoop Dog Intern to Snoop Dog Attending and the mock Emmy Award ceremony by Doctor Cox... "And the winner is Dame Judy Dorian"... "Take that Tony Shaloub".

Awesomeness level on that show - way frickin' high.

My take on JD and Turk in honor of the show's final season.

By the by, I'm off to WizardWorld Texas tomorrow, so no promises on sketches for Thursday and Friday but I'll see what I can do.

What Up Fellas?

Making up for my late post yesterday, here's a standard early morning post with a panel in progress from "Dead Inspector". Props to my buddy John, who by calling me during his writer's block inspired me to really focus on this panel last night. Hopefully I did the same in return.

Oh, and no - today's headline is not what Captain Miller's actual line of dialogue in this panel. JC writes better than that.

"Heroes" - damn, that was a fun episode last night. Finally we found out what happened between the end of Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2. And Kristen Bell... well, let's just say I like her and I'm glad she's part of the show. Does anyone else think that Adam might be the sire of ALL of the Heroes? In theory he's been alive long enough to have a whole litter of kids. Just a thought.

Raining in Baltimore

Rain in Baltimore in the fall and winter months is pretty depressing. The sky is perpetually gray and gloomy and it just puts a damper on my entire mood. Friday we had rain. Last night more rain and finally all of today... you guessed it - rain. Yuck. Today's quick sketch was inspired by the weather. Enjoy.
The weekend rounds of wedding reception sites was pretty fruitful. Here's a picture of the front runner for the reception site. We thought it was pretty beautiful.

It's Finally Here!

iPhone Day

The day has finally come. It's time for me to join the elite multi-media phone users of the world. They've tempted me with clever commercials, lured me in with recommendations from friends, and awoke something I did not know I had... phone envy. Alright Apple, I surrender. You have me with your beautiful design, touch screen, and the fact that I have all of my music in iTunes format. Yesterday was liberation day from my Verizon contract. Today is iPhone day.
I hope to get a sketch up later today. I have to get cracking on work this morning as D and I are taking the second half of the afternoon to look at some wedding reception sites. Maybe I'll take some photos with my... iPhone?

In other news, it's time for D and I to get a new washer. I have to give credit to Eric at My Appliance Guy out of Parkville, MD. We had him fix the washer early in the year under our home warranty. It broke again and to his credit he passed up on the money he could have made by telling me honestly that I'd be better off getting a new one. Then he spent some time on the phone with me recommending where I should go and what brand I should buy to avoid future repairs. Honesty is a hard but valuable trait to find in a service provider and I think Eric knows he's probably secured himself a customer for the definite future. I wish more businesses operated this way.

If anyone has seen coupons or sales for national chains like Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, etc. please let me know.

Something New on The Blog

You may notice something new on the blog today. In the right column (scroll down) you will see some Google ads. I've decided to see if my free sketches can generate a little extra income for me (why not, right?). So if you enjoy the free sketches and drop by the blog on a regular basis, you can support me by clicking on a link from one of the ads. I've decided to go with the least intrusive option by utilizing the text only ads and only ads the relate to the content of my blog. Any and all clicks are appreciated.

I'm also toying with the idea of making some of the original sketches available for sale but haven't quite thought that one through. If that comes to fruition, you folks will be the first to know.

Today's sketch is David and Steve having a conversation over a cup of coffee (a complete panel from the current page). Quick observation - there are no good coffee joints in Central Virginia or North Carolina. It seems to be the last area in the country that Starbucks hasn't penetrated with the ridiculous saturation that is omni-present in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. I can't remember the last time I had to LOOK for Starbucks. In Durham, NC the only one I saw was in a Barnes and Noble. There's not even a Dunkin Donuts off the highway. Just gas stations and fast food. With Maxwell House (or something equally dreadful).

Also, I watched Ghost Rider yesterday. My mistake. It's every bit as bad as you've heard. Worse in fact. I would go so far as to say that Mark Steven Johnson should never be allowed to make movies again. He's done Daredevil, Elektra, and Ghost Rider. Three strikes and you are out my friend.

Captain Miller Progressing



Another panel in development. You saw the preliminary sketch earlier and now here's the panel about 3/4 of the way complete.

D and I took advantage of our hi def channels and TV for the first time and skipped the Tivo option (which doesn't record in HD) to watch Heroes last night. First of all, commercials feel quite odd now days. Secondly, hi def is awesome! The colors and details are almost frightening. I'm still a bit mixed on this season but the episodes do seem to be improving every week so I'm keeping my outlook positive.

Random thought from yesterday - I'm pretty certain that if I won the lottery, my house would burn down (or something equally catastrophic). Just so I wouldn't have all that money. Hence I do not play the lottery.

In other news, I saw American Gangster this weekend and it was quite excellent. Both Denzel and Russell Crowe put out killer performances. I love Denzel as a bad guy because he always plays them with such depth. Another actor would have turned that role into a charactiture but in Denzel's hands it was a fully fleshed sympathetic character. Crowe also delivered a principled but quite flawed hero. The only negative I have is it was a bit on the long side. Solidly recommended.

And a great weekend retreated for writing with my boys Andy and John. It was excellent to take that much time to reconnect with them, brainstorm, and get writing done. Plus a fun roadtrip to NC and bad meals at local joints and a Cracker Barrel breakfast. C and B, boys. C and B.

More of a Developing Page

Here's another early panel on the new page for "Dead Inspector". I'm hoping to get a few hours in total today on the page. Captain Miller say hello to Steve and David.

Halloween - pretty awesome. D and I had a ton of fun handing out candy and comics to kids and while there was a slow start to the evening we ended up with a steady stream for about 2 hours. We even estimated our candy and comics pretty well so there was relatively little left over. Our first Halloween at our own house (last year we both had classes on Halloween). Good times.

David at the Grave

Spent the morning working on an actual page from "Dead Inspector" so I thought I'd share part of it as an under-drawing.

In other news, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has an awesome-ness level of "very frickin' high". The wireless guitar controller rocks and they really amped up the graphics in this new installment. Lots of little gameplay tweaks too that make things a little bit more visually stimulating and entertaining. So far the song selection looks great and the career co-op mode means D and I can play together. Plus X-Box Live capabilities (oooohhhh). The only real downside - an increased price tag of $100 for the game and controller. Now when are they going to give us X-Box-ers the 80s edition?

Good Monday Morning

David from Dead Inspector makes another appearance in the Daily Sketch. He has to be the character who's most frequently appeared here, right?

In other news, I installed my brand new Sony CD player/ipod interface into my car this weekend. The good folks at Crutchfield made the entire experience easy and pleasant and in all seriousness these guys have some of the best customer service and tech support I've EVER encountered. When they missed including a dash kit in the shipment they offered to let me go down to Best Buy, pick up one, and credited my Discover card for the Best Buy retail price. Just so I wouldn't have to wait until Monday to get the missing piece. Rock on! If I ever need more electronics from the car, I'm going straight to them.

30 Days of Night Was Awesome

It really was. In fact it may have been the vampire equivelant of "28 Days Later". Incredibly well directed with some great performances and pathos. The selective use of gore and color was spot on and the special effects on the vampires were fantastic. Highly recommended for fans of horror.

Long-winded Post... But Lots of Pictures!

Here are some thumbnails of a page I'm working on currently for Dead Inspector. The final panel is the first close up of Captain Miller and as you might be able to tell my initial inclination was to make him a younger Asian guy.

In related news, my good buddy and publisher at Ait/PlanetLar, Larry Young sent me an early Christmas present in the old email. He forwarded me a PDF preview of my first published work as a writer AND an artist. It's a 5 page backup in his series "Black Diamond" (well worth reading) entitled "The Curse" which will appear in issue #6, due out in December. It was a great feeling to see something I'd crafted from start to finish. My boy Nick Senior pumped out some wicked colors for the piece. Here's a sample page.
Plus I'm very happy to tease that the Forever Man project is moving along incredibly well. John (my co-writer) and I were incredibly lucky to hook up with the mad talented Thomas Nalchik. Thomas is pumping out page after amazing page and I can't wait to show it off when the project is ready to be seen. In the meantime, a small teaser image... What can I say I'm in an image happy mood this morning.

Oh and today is a Woot Off at woot.com. If you like gadgets and tech, you must know Woot.

Last but not least, Crutchfield has the best customer service of any company I've interacted with in the last year. Hands down. I ordered an ipod interface from their online store and not only did they have great pricing, free shipping, and free instructions and technical installation support but when the part turned out not to be the right one they helped me find an alternate solution and met me halfway on the price difference on the my brand new Sony in dash CD/radio/ipod interface. Chris @ Crutchfield, you sir are a scholar and a gentleman.

She Said Yes

Big News fans of sketch blogs and general awesomeness! This weekend I popped the question to my lovely girl at her parents house in scenic New Jersey and she was kind enough to accept my questionable offer. It's probably not fair to have bribed her with a diamond, but I gotta stack the deck where I can. There was much rejoicing followed by future mother-in-law showing off the new couple to complete strangers in the restaurant. Good times had by all!

Oh, and here's another daily sketch once again experimenting with Captain Miller's look in Dead Inspector. This was another possible look for the new character in Dead Inspector, Captain Miller. But JC decided he liked the take I posted for Sketch #99 so it's kind of a moot point. Still I thought it was a nice head shot so why not post it.

One More Too Go!

I'm one away from 100 sketches on this blog. It's a pretty cool feeling.

This one is a character design for a new character entering my Dead Inspector pages currently, Captain Miller. JC didn't give me a character profile or description so I just started tossing around ideas. This is a kind of typical supervising police officer looking guy, but instead of making him balding and/or overweight I tried to make him more of a rugged Tom Selleck archtype. Gotta love some Tom Selleck. He's a man's man.

Heroes is starting to pick up. The first few episodes were a bit uneven, but I'm found last night that they are beginning to pick up the pace and weave elements of the story together more. They even managed to find a way to make the Latino brother and sister interesting by adding Sylar to the mix. That guy is going to be awesome as Spock in the new Star Trek movie.

Also started watching Traveler last night, which was a cancelled show from the summer. D and I tivoed the whole thing (anticipating a cancellation and not wanting to be left with another unfullfilled story) and we heard they'd finished off the storyline so we thought we'd give it a shot. So far two episodes in and the set up is pretty darn good. Drop a comment if you watched the series and have thoughts on it.

I am Iron Man

It's Superhero Friday. For anyone who hasn't seen the Iron Man trailer with Robert Downey Jr., you should check it out. Downey totally gets the character of Tony Stark. And the Iron Man suit (the modern one) looks awesome. Plus they included Black Sabbath at the end. Rock.

I was thinking if Tony Stark was a real person he would be Richard Branson. I could totally see Sir Richard putting on a flying metal suit.

Also check out the trailer for The Golden Compass. Fighting warrior polar bears, angry monkeys, and Sam Elliot. I'm in.

Lastly, I'm looking at getting out of my Verizon contract. Apparently new fed regulations say that if you can find someone to take over your mobile contract your wireless provider can't charge you an early termination fee. I have a year left on my Family Share plan with 2 phones, which I'll throw in for free for anyone who wants the contract. You can find out more HERE.

Quick David

Just a very fast pen sketch of David from Dead Inspector. It didn't quite work out the way I wanted it to, but they can't all be winners.
I went to the Apple store and played with the iPhone yesterday. I gotta say despite Rob's warnings to not buy into it early before AT&T moves away from the Edge Network, it is a sweet sweet machine and I'm sorely tempted to pick one up. I was most surprised with how easy it was to type on the virtual keyboard. Admitedly much of that decision rests on whether or not I can get out of the existing Verizon contract.

Another warmup pen sketch of Bill from "Dead Inspector". He seems a bit skeptical, but I'm not sure why. I like the expression I got out of this quickie and the way his hair turned out.
I checked out "The Next Iron Chef" last night on Tivo and I think it's great, campy fun. The US Chairman (portrayed with complete commitment by Mark Dacascos) was in rare form during the show.

Networking Woes

Computers are great... when they work. So I had Verizon Fios installed in the house this week. So far the service is great but as with any transition there have been problems. One of the biggest and the reason there was no post yesterday is it has screwed up my network file sharing. I thought I had it fixed last night... but I was wrong. So the fun continues this weekend.

Here's a quick sketch I did pretty much straight with a brush pen to play with a loose gesture.

And here's another bonus sketch since I missed yesterday. It's a piece I did for a wedding gift for my friends, Marc and Shelley who are getting married this weekend. Congrats Marc and Shelley!

Quick Bill

Here's a quick sketch of Bill from "Dead Inspector". I usually take way too long on my sketches, but this one's a good example of just getting the idea out on paper quickly.

In other ramblings, "Reaper" seems like it might actually be a decent show after 2 episodes. It's a bit formulaic but overall very entertaining with as they say 'a young likeable cast'. Which probably means it'll be cancelled soon.

Oh, and Verizon Fios comes to my house today. I'm very, very excited not have to deal with Comcast soon. So excited.

I Have No Idea...

Who this guy is or why I drew him. But sometimes with a warm up sketch your hand just starts moving and something starts to come out of a few random lines. Is he a zombie, a tough guy, or just under some weird lighting? You tell me.

It's October?!

Wow. The year moves way too quickly. Really, just way too fast. It seems like just the other day it was the dead of summer filled with oppressive heat and for me running from one city to another for trade shows. This morning I got up to go for a run and realized it was still pretty much pitch black outside at a time when a few weeks back the sun would be coming up.

The weekend was gorgeous though and I managed to get a bunch of yard work done on Saturday. While I really enjoyed the time spent outside in the cool Fall weather, I couldn't help but notice how quickly the weekend flies by when you basically spend a day doing chores. Welcome to being an adult I suppose.

I saw "The Kingdom" over the weekend and thought it was an enjoyable and clever movie. Sure it had some flaws, but overall it was enjoyable and thought-provoking. I also saw "Fracture" on DVD over the weekend and thought it was a pretty mediocre murder mystery. I fell asleep during the tail end of it. Take that for what you will.
